Genres of Text: apa aja sih genre text itu??

Ada banyak Genre Text. Diantaranya adalah: Narrative, Procedure, Descriptive, Argumentative, Persuasive, Anecdote, Compare and Contrast, Opinion, Recount, Report, Discussion, Explanation, Exposition, News Item, dan lain-lain. Mari kita bahas satu persatu.

1. NARRATIVE 

Definition: Narrative text is to amuse, entertain and to deal with actual or vicarious experience in different ways.

Generic Structure of Narrative Text

  1. Orientation : sets the scene and introduces the participants
  2. Evaluation : a stepping back to evaluation the plight 
  3. Complication : a crisis arises 
  4. Resolution : the crisis is resolved, for better or for worse
  5. Re-orientation : optional-closure of events.

2. DESCRIPTIVE

Definition: To describe particular person, place or thing 

Generic Structure

  1. Identification : identifies phenomenon to be described
  2. Description : describe parts, qualities, characteristic

3. PROCEDURE

Definition: To describe how something is accomplished through a sequence of actions or steps

Generic Structure

  1. Goal
  2. Materials
  3. Steps

4. OPINION

Definition: Shows an opinion or argument with its reason

Generic Structure

  1. The Topic Sentence which states your opinion specified by the controlling ideas.
  2. The Supporting arguments which have to be reasons, proofs or evidences sustained by examples enough to illustrate the idea clearly.
  3. The Concluding sentence which is normally a reminder that reflects or somehow echoes the topic sentence so as to maintain the unity of the paragraph.

 

5. RECOUNT 

Definition: To retell event for the purpose of informing or entertaining


Generic Structur

  1. Orientation : provide the setting and introduce participants
  2. Event : tell what happened, in what sequence 
  3. Re-orientation : optional-closure of event

6. REPORT

Definition: To describe the way things are, with reference to a range of natural, man-made and social phenomena in our environment.

Generic Structure

  1. General classification : tells what the phenomenon under discussion is. 
  2. Description tell what the phenomenon under discussion is like in terms of (1) parts, (2) qualities, (3)habits or behaviors, if living: use, if non-natural 

7. DISCUSSION

Definition: To present (at least) two point of view about an issue

Generic Structure

  1. Issue : statement, preview
  2. Arguments for and against or statement of differing point of view : point, elaboration
  3. Conclusion or recommendation


8. EXPLANATION

Definition: To explain the processes involved in the formation or workings of natural or social cultural phenomena.

Generic Structure

  1. A general statement to position the reader.
  2. A sequenced explanation of why or something occurs.

9. EXPOSITION (ANALYTICAL)

Definition: To persuade the reader or toward something or a case.

Generic Structure

1. Thesis Position  :  introduces topic and indicates writer's position.
2. Arguments:
  • Point : restates main arguments outlined in preview 
  • Elaboration : develops and supports each point/argument. 
3. Reiteration : restates writer’s position

10. EXPOSITION (HORTATORY)

Definition: To persuade the reader or listener that something should or should not be the case.

Generic Structure

  1. Thesis :Announcement if issue concern.
  2. Arguments: Reasons for concern, leading to recommendation.
  3. Recommendation: Statement of what ought or ought not to happen.

11. NEWS ITEM

Definition: To inform readers, listeners or viewers about events of the day which are considered newsworthy or  important.


Generic Structure

  1. Newsworthy events: recounts the event in summary form.
  2. Background events: elaborate what happened, to whom, in what circumstances.
  3. Sources: comments by participants in, witnesses to and authorities expert on the event. 

12. ANECDOTE

Definition: To share with others an account of an unusual or amusing incident


Generic Structure

  1. Abstract : signals the retelling of an unusual incident
  2. Orientation : sets the scene
  3. Crisis : provides details of  the unusual incident
  4. Reaction : reaction to crises
  5. Coda : optional-reflection on or evaluation of the incident
